Many of my clients often ask, “What can I do when everything feels too overwhelming?” Whether it’s stress, anxiety, or simply feeling out of balance, emotional overwhelm can make it hard to function. Here are five simple yet effective ways to ground yourself and restore a sense of calm.
Create with Intention- Art therapy is a powerful tool that allows you to express what words can’t. If you're feeling overwhelmed, grab some paper and a pencil or paints. The act of creating—without judgment—can be soothing and help release pent-up emotions. Don’t worry about the outcome; focus on the process.
Tune into Your Body - Sensorimotor psychotherapy encourages mindful awareness of your physical sensations. When you're stressed, take a moment to sit quietly and notice how your body feels. Are your shoulders tense? Is your breathing shallow? By becoming aware of these sensations, you can begin to consciously relax and release tension.
Breathe - It sounds simple, but focusing on your breath can bring you back to the present moment. Try this: inhale slowly for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for six. This helps calm your nervous system and brings immediate relief.
Mindful Movement - Whether through yoga or simply stretching, moving your body with intention helps release stored stress. Even a few minutes of gentle yoga or walking can help shift your energy and provide mental clarity.
Practice Self-Compassion - Often, we add to our overwhelm by being hard on ourselves. Remember that it's okay to not have all the answers. Being kind to yourself and acknowledging your emotions without judgment can reduce the pressure and help you find peace.
